App of the week #28 / Panoramic Photo editor

“Photosynth for iOS is the panorama creation app that makes it easy and fun to capture and share interactive panoramas of the places, people, and events that are important to you. Using the latest in computer vision techniques, Photosynth allows you to not only make a panorama from left to right, but also up and down, enabling you to capture a full sphere.”

Sometimes you want to capture more than what your camera can cover. But without a wide angle lens thats practically impossible in one shot. What Photosynth offers is the ability to take a number of shots in succession and then stitch them together to form one complete photo. The on screen markers will guide you on the shots you’ve taken and where to move the camera next. You can move your camera both vertically and horizontally and capture the entire space around you.

Once you are done the app will process the images and stitch them together. My tip to achieving the best shot is to take your time, capturing steady and level shots. And not too many shots in total as you will get overlap where the perpective isn’t quite matching. I’ve tested many apps that are specifically for panoramic photos and this is by far the best. The quality of the stitching is really impressive and the on screen markers are really helpful in the capturing process.

You have the options to export your creation as an image or an interactive panorama which you can move around in 360 degrees. It was developed by Microsoft so I guess thats why this solution is free, but overall a much better choice than other apps you have to pay for. Below is an example panoramic that I took of our new studio (5 photos stitched together).

See it on the app store.
